Chemistry (General)

LIST B COURSE
Chemistry (General)

Why Choose This Course?

What powers your car, protects your smartphone and helps build the world around us? Chemistry General Year 12 explores the science behind everyday materials and technologies, helping students understand how chemical knowledge is used to solve practical problems and improve quality of life.

Through hands-on investigations, students examine the properties and uses of substances that impact their daily lives. With a focus on fuels, hydrocarbons and metals, this course develops an understanding of how chemistry contributes to transport, industry, sustainability and technological innovation.

Unit 3: Equilibrium, Acids and Redox Reactions

Investigate hydrocarbons and their importance as fuels in modern society. Students explore the chemistry of crude oil, fuel production and combustion, and examine the environmental impacts associated with transport and energy use. Through the context of driving and fuel consumption, students evaluate sustainable alternatives and consider how chemistry contributes to reducing environmental challenges.

Unit 4: Organic Chemistry and Chemical Synthesis

Explore the properties and applications of metals and alloys that are essential to modern technologies and infrastructure. Students investigate factors affecting corrosion, methods of corrosion prevention, and how material properties influence their suitability for different purposes. Practical investigations provide opportunities to test, compare and evaluate materials used in everyday and industrial settings.

Skills Developed
Develop practical laboratory skills through experimentation and investigation. Learn to collect and analyse data, evaluate scientific evidence, solve real-world problems, and communicate scientific findings effectively. Students build an understanding of how chemistry informs decisions relating to industry, technology and environmental sustainability.

Potential Careers
Laboratory Technician, Chemical Process Operator, Water Quality Officer, Mining and Resources Technician, Environmental Officer, Engineering Tradesperson, Manufacturing Technician, Agricultural Technician, Defence Technical Specialist.

Study Options
TAFE Certificates and Diplomas in Applied Science, Laboratory Operations, Mining, Engineering, Environmental Management and Health Sciences, as well as a wide range of trade apprenticeships and traineeships.
