Human Biology (ATAR)

LIST B COURSE
Human Biology (ATAR)

Why Choose This Course?

How does your body maintain balance in a changing environment? Why do some diseases spread rapidly while others can be controlled? What can genetics and evolution reveal about human diversity and our shared history?

Human Biology ATAR Year 12 explores the structure and function of human body systems, the causes and prevention of disease, and the genetic and evolutionary processes that shape human populations. Through the study of contemporary health issues and scientific research, students develop an understanding of how advances in biological knowledge and technology contribute to improving human health and wellbeing.

Unit 3: Homeostasis and Disease

Investigate the mechanisms that maintain a stable internal environment and enable the body to respond to change. Explore the roles of the nervous and endocrine systems in regulating body functions and examine how the immune system protects against disease. Students evaluate factors influencing health, investigate disease processes, and consider the application of scientific knowledge to public health challenges.

Unit 4: Human Variation and Evolution

Examine the genetic basis of human variation and the processes that contribute to diversity within populations. Explore patterns of inheritance, population genetics and evolutionary theory to understand human origins and adaptation over time. Students investigate how genetic evidence is used to trace human history and evaluate the benefits and ethical considerations of emerging genetic technologies.

Skills and Capabilities Developed

Develop skills in scientific inquiry through the analysis of biological data, interpretation of medical research and evaluation of scientific evidence. Students learn to investigate health-related issues, assess the impact of biotechnology and genetic technologies, and communicate complex scientific concepts using appropriate terminology and conventions.

Career Pathways

Nursing, Paramedicine, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Public Health, Biomedical Science, Medical Research, Genetic Counselling, Health Promotion, Exercise Science and Allied Health professions.

Post-School Study Options
