Children, Family & Community (General)

Children, Family and the Community (CFC) is a General subject undertaken over Year 11 and 12 that has strong practical and theoretical components. 

Previous experience in childcare, textiles or foods related subjects is not essential although being familiar with some of the concepts and equipment can be an advantage. 

Students select this subject out of interest in working with children and understanding how children and families fit into the community. It is highly recommended to those who are interested in a career in teaching, nursing, psychology, child-care or any other career working with children. 

Students cover a range of concepts including: 

  • Advocacy for children and families in need
  • Growth and development from pregnancy through to age 6 
  • Activities to support healthy development of children 6 and under 

Students also have freedom in the design process. Projects are constantly changing but may include: 

  • Cultural displays of children’s games
  • Designing and creating activities for pre-school students and running the activities when visiting a local school 
  • Preparing healthy snacks for pregnancy and young children
