Why Choose This Course?
How do species survive, reproduce and adapt in an ever-changing world? What genetic evidence connects all living things? How can biological knowledge help solve global challenges in health, conservation and sustainability?
Biology ATAR Year 12 explores the continuity and diversity of life, from the molecular basis of inheritance to the interactions that shape ecosystems. Students investigate how biological systems persist and change over time, developing an understanding of the interconnectedness of living organisms and their environments. Through practical investigations and the analysis of scientific evidence, students learn to apply biological knowledge to contemporary issues affecting individuals, communities and the natural world.
Investigate the molecular basis of heredity and the mechanisms of inheritance. Explore population genetics, natural selection and evolutionary processes that contribute to biodiversity and speciation. Students examine how scientific understanding of genetics and evolution informs conservation, biosecurity and biodiversity management.
Examine how organisms maintain stability through homeostatic mechanisms and respond to internal and external environmental changes. Investigate infectious disease, population dynamics and ecosystem sustainability, and evaluate strategies used to address biological challenges in changing environments. .
Skills and Capabilities Developed
Develop skills in scientific inquiry through laboratory and field investigations, data collection and analysis, critical evaluation of scientific evidence, and evidence-based problem solving. Students learn to communicate complex biological concepts effectively and apply biological understanding to issues involving health, biodiversity, sustainability and environmental management.
