Year 9

AFL and AFLW Academy

The Year 9 AFL and AFLW Academy is a specialised program designed for students who demonstrate a strong interest and commitment to Australian Rules Football. Students are invited to apply for inclusion in the academy through a selection process.

The academy consists of multiple lessons each week and incorporates both practical and theoretical components to support the development of students as athletes, leaders, and team members.

Practical Components

  • Strength and conditioning
  • AFL and AFLW skill development
  • Coaching and leadership
  • Match play and game-based learning

Theoretical Components

  • Game structures and tactical awareness
  • Nutrition and athlete wellbeing
  • Responsible use of social media
  • Coaching principles and umpiring

A compulsory co-curricular component forms part of the academy, with students expected to attend a one-hour training session each week, either before or after school. Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to participate in fixtures, competitions, and development programs against other schools and colleges, enabling them to apply their skills in authentic game environments.

The program also includes excursions, guest presenters, goal-setting workshops, and leadership development activities. These experiences are designed to enhance students’ understanding of the game while fostering resilience, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
