Year 9

Sport and Recreation

The Year 9 Sport and Recreation course is designed for students who have an interest in alternative sports, outdoor recreation, and active lifestyles. The course provides students with opportunities to participate in a diverse range of land and water-based activities while developing physical, personal, and social skills.

Students will engage in practical and theoretical learning experiences that promote teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, resilience, and self-management. The course encourages students to challenge themselves in new environments while developing an appreciation for lifelong participation in sport and recreation.

Course Topics Include:

  • Survival swimming and water rescues
  • Navigation, orienteering, and mapping
  • Mountain biking
  • Leadership and teamwork

A key focus of the course is the development of self-responsibility, cooperation, and effective communication within group settings. Students will be encouraged to apply these skills through a range of practical challenges and outdoor learning experiences.

The course includes a camp to the Dwellingup region, providing students with the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge developed throughout the year in an authentic outdoor environment.

This elective also serves as a pathway for students considering further study in Specialised Physical Education or Sport and Recreation in Year 10.

Pre-requisites

Consultation with the Head of Health and Physical Education is required if:

  • The student is not a competent swimmer.
  • The student has a record of poor or unsafe behaviour that may impact participation in outdoor and recreational activities.
