Year 11

Human Biology (General)

LIST B COURSE
Human Biology (General)

Have you ever wondered how your body responds during exercise, why sleep and nutrition are important for wellbeing, or how doctors use health checks to keep people healthy?

Human Biology General explores how the human body works and how lifestyle choices can influence health and wellbeing. Students investigate the structure and function of body systems and examine how these systems work together to keep us healthy, active and balanced in everyday life.

This course connects science to real-world health issues and encourages students to make informed and responsible decisions about personal and community wellbeing. Through practical investigations and collaborative learning, students develop scientific understanding, communication skills and an appreciation for caring for themselves and others.

Unit 1: The Human Body

Students explore the structure and function of cells, tissues and major body systems, including the skeletal, muscular and digestive systems. They investigate how these systems work together to support movement, growth and overall health.

Students examine the role of nutrition, exercise and lifestyle choices in maintaining wellbeing and investigate how healthy habits can improve quality of life. Through practical activities and case studies, students apply their learning to real-world health situations relevant to teenagers and families.

Unit 2: Biological Systems

Why is hydration important during sport? How does the body transport oxygen during exercise? And why are regular health checks important?

In Unit 2, students investigate the circulatory, respiratory and urinary systems and how they work together to transport materials, remove waste and maintain balance within the body. Students explore how illnesses, poor lifestyle choices and environmental factors can affect these systems and examine strategies used to maintain good health and prevent disease.

Through practical investigations and the analysis of health information, students develop an understanding of preventative healthcare and the importance of making informed choices to support lifelong wellbeing.
