Materials Design & Technology – Wood (General)

MDT Wood is a highly practical subject undertaken over Yr 11 and 12. Previous experience in Design & Technology subjects is not essential although being familiar with workshop processes and procedures can be an advantage.

In Year 12, students are introduced to elements and fundamentals of design and consider human factors involved in the design, production and use of their projects. Students learn about the nature, properties and environmental impacts related to a variety of materials, and production techniques.

Students cover a range of skills including:

  • Occupational Health & Safety in a work environment
  • Design process and how to convey concepts and ideas
  • Hand and power skills
  • Identification of types of timbers and their origin, sustainability etc.
  • Various joining techniques
  • Various finishing techniques

Students also have freedom in the design process. Projects are constantly changing but may include:

  • High quality dovetail joint jewellery boxes with inlay parquetry
  • Bedside tables and coffee tables
  • Display boards, recycled timber picture frames
  • Kitchen caddys with laminated cutting boards

MDT Wood is fun and engaging, while setting students up for a love of working with timber. Skills learnt however apply across any workshop environment.
