Year 8

AFL and AFLW Academy

The Year 8 AFL / AFLW Academy is a specialised program designed for students who demonstrate a strong interest and commitment to Australian Rules Football. Students are invited to apply for inclusion in the program and are required to complete trials during Term 3.

The academy includes a number of lessons each week and incorporates both practical and theoretical components to support the holistic development of student athletes.

Practical Components

  • Strength and conditioning
  • AFL and AFLW skill development
  • Coaching and umpiring
  • Match play and game-based learning

Theoretical Components

  • Game structures, tactics, and decision-making
  • Nutrition and athlete wellbeing
  • Responsible use of social media
  • Research investigations into AFL and AFLW performance, leadership, and development pathways

A compulsory co-curricular component forms part of the academy, with students expected to attend a one-hour training session each week, either before or after school. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in competitive fixtures, carnivals, and development programs against other schools and colleges.

The program also includes excursions, guest presenters, goal-setting workshops, and leadership development activities. These experiences are designed to enhance students’ understanding of the game, foster personal growth, and develop the leadership, teamwork, and resilience required for success both on and off the field.
