Year 11

Chemistry (ATAR & General)

Chemistry (ATAR)

What if you could invent the next life-saving medicine or create materials to clean up oil spills?
Chemistry ATAR is your gateway to understanding and designing the substances that power modern life. Chemistry influences everything from the clothes we wear to the medicines that save lives and the technologies that drive our future.

Unit 1: Chemical Fundamentals

Explore atomic structure, bonding, energy changes, and chemical reactions. Investigate how chemical properties are used to design useful materials and products.

Unit 2: Molecular Interactions and Reactions

Examine molecular forces, reaction rates, and chemical equilibria to understand how reactions are controlled in both nature and industry.

Skills and Capabilities Developed
Plan and conduct chemical experiments following scientific procedures, use mathematics to solve mole calculations and predict reaction yields, analyse and interpret experimental data using digital graphing software, evaluate the social and environmental impacts of chemical production, and communicate findings in laboratory reports and presentations.

Potential Careers
Chemical Engineer, Pharmacist, Environmental Scientist, Materials Scientist, Forensic Chemist, Toxicologist.

Post-School Study Options
Bachelor of Science (Chemistry), Engineering degrees, Pharmacy programs, Environmental Science pathways, Biomedical Science.

Pre-requisites
State Grade B in Year 10 Science + Mathematics

    Chemistry (General)

Have you ever wondered what’s inside the cleaning products you use, or how food stays fresh?
Chemistry General explores the chemistry behind everyday materials, making connections between scientific concepts and the real world around you. This course focuses on practical skills and knowledge that relate directly to industries like manufacturing, food science, mining, and environmental management.

Unit 1: Materials, Mixtures, and Compounds

Investigate the properties and uses of common materials, mixtures, and compounds. Learn about chemical changes and simple separation techniques used in industry and daily life.

Unit 2: Chemical Reactions in Everyday Life

Explore how chemical reactions are involved in food production, energy generation, cleaning, and medicine. Understand acids, bases, and the safe use of everyday chemicals.

    Skills and Capabilities Developed
Plan and conduct practical experiments safely and accurately, interpret and present scientific data, analyse the environmental and social impact of everyday chemical use, develop teamwork and communication skills in laboratory settings, and apply ethical considerations when handling chemical substances.

    Potential Careers
Laboratory Technician, Food Technologist, Environmental Field Officer, Mining Technician, Chemical Plant Operator, Plumbing or Electrical Apprentice, Water Treatment Operator.

    Post-School Study Options
TAFE Laboratory Technology Certificates, Environmental Science Diplomas, Apprenticeships in Plumbing, Electrical, Construction, or Mining, Chemical and Resources Industry Training Programs.
