Biology (ATAR)

Biology (ATAR)

Have you ever wondered how forests recover after fires, or how a tiny, fertilised cell becomes a living, breathing human?
Biology ATAR opens the marvels of life, helping you understand and protect the living world around you. This course offers exciting opportunities to explore how modern science tackles biodiversity loss, food security, health challenges, and environmental sustainability.

Unit 1: Ecosystems and Biodiversity

Investigate ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity, energy transfer, and how human impacts like climate change threaten delicate ecological balances. Explore conservation strategies and the role of scientific research in protecting species.

Unit 2: From Single Cells to Multicellular Organisms

Study the cellular structures and processes fundamental to life, and how specialised cells work together to form complex organisms. Understand how breakthroughs in genetics and cell biology are shaping medicine and biotechnology.

    Skills and Capabilities Developed
Conduct fieldwork to collect and analyse ecological data, evaluate the ethical considerations of conservation projects, critically analyse research papers and media reports on biotechnology, use digital tools for ecological modelling and genetic analysis, and communicate scientific arguments on biodiversity issues.

    Potential Careers
Environmental Scientist, Marine Biologist, Doctor, Genetic Counsellor, Ecologist, Conservation Officer, Biotechnology Researcher, Agricultural Scientist.

    Post-School Study Options
Bachelor of Science (Biology), Environmental Science degrees, Biotechnology programs, Health Science pathways, Veterinary Science.

Pre-requisites: State Grade C in Year 10 Science
