Year 12

Human Biology (ATAR & General)

Human Biology (ATAR)

Why Choose This Course?
How does your body fight off infection? Why do some diseases spread rapidly, while others fade away? What does it mean to be human from an evolutionary perspective?

Human Biology ATAR Year 12 explores the science behind disease, regulation, genetics and evolution. You’ll examine how the body maintains balance and defends itself against internal and external threats and discover how genetic diversity shapes human populations.

Unit 3: Homeostasis and Disease

Investigate how the nervous and endocrine systems maintain internal balance. Understand disease processes, immune responses, and current issues in public health.

Unit 4: Human Variation and Evolution

Examine how genetic variation arises and is inherited. Explore evolutionary trends and human origins, including how population genetics helps track human migration and health risks.

Skills and Capabilities Developed
Analyse medical data and research scientific case studies, evaluate genetic technologies and ethical implications, explore biotechnology in disease treatment, and communicate complex ideas in scientific formats.

Potential Careers
Nurse, Paramedic, Medical Researcher, Genetic Counsellor, Physiotherapist, Health Educator.

Post-School Study Options
Bachelor of Nursing, Biomedical Science, Public Health, Genetics, Allied Health degrees.

Pre-requisites
Year 11 ATAR Human Biology strongly recommended

Human Biology (General)

Why Choose This Course?
What happens inside your body when you’re sick, stressed or exercising? Human Biology General Year 12 explores how your body’s systems respond to everyday challenges and how lifestyle choices impact your health. This course is a perfect fit for students interested in healthcare, fitness, or wellbeing.

Unit 3: Reproduction and Development
Study how the reproductive system works and what influences healthy pregnancy and development. Explore the stages of human development, hormonal control, and how lifestyle and environment affect reproductive health.

Unit 4: Infectious Disease

Discover how bacteria, viruses and parasites affect the body and how the immune system defends against them. Investigate how vaccines, hygiene, and technology help control disease and keep populations healthy.

Skills Developed
Apply biological concepts to real health issues, conduct investigations, interpret data, evaluate medical technologies and communicate scientific knowledge effectively.

Potential Careers
Aged Care Worker, Health and Fitness Coach, Nursing Assistant, Allied Health Assistant.

Study Options
Certificate III/IV in Health Services, Diploma of Nursing, Allied Health or Fitness qualifications at TAFE.
